Forestry Board Homepage
The Howard County Forestry Board in partnership with Mount View Middle School help to create an outdoor classroom with participation of the Chesapeake Bay School Reforestation Project. Adjacent to the school is a storm water management pond approximately half an acre in size.
After the students did an impact study of the area, their recommendation was to creat an area that would attract wildlife, help control erosion, and give the students an outside classroom. The students divided up into committees, one to identify plants for the wildlife, one to identify plants for erosion control, and wetland plantings. The final group worked on the design of the area.
Trees were purchased through the Maryland Treemendous program, and a total of 30 trees and 40 other plants were planted by students and Board members. Some of the plants we planted were Redbuds, Winterberry, Arrowwood Viburnum, Oriental Poppy, and Purple Cone Flower to name just a few. The students will be able to use this forested wetland to investigate and study a variety of natural resource topics including hydrology, wildlife habitat, plant identification, and erosion control. This continues to be an ongoing project of the Forestry Board and Mount View Middle School.
