Arboretum Without Walls
Harwood Park
In cooperation with the Howard County Department of Recreation
and Parks, the Forestry Board formally opened the Harwood
Park Arboretum.
On Thursday, 7 April 2004, a bright and sunny morning,
a goodly crowd gathered to witness the opening of the
Arboretum, and to take part in the ceremonies.
County Executive Jim Robey presided and announced
the official opening.
The Chairman of the Howard County Forest Conservancy District Board,
Steve Parker gave a magnificent speech, thanking all assembled
for their hard work and generous support.
Chairman of the County Council, Guy Guzzone, gave a splendid
speech about the effectiveness of community involvement, and
the need to preserve the environment. He thanked the Howard
County Forestry Board for their efforts.
This sign for the Pin Oak is an example of the educational labels
which identified the trees in Harwood Park. More than a dozen
signs were erected in the park.
Politicians and others were invited to snip the official red
ribbon, formally declaring the Harwood Arboretum to be open.
A new Corkscrew Willow was planted for the occasion. The County
Executive and Council members were put to work on this sunny day.
