Howard County has received the honor of Tree City U.S.A. again for the 16th consecutive year. To qualify as a Tree City in a given year, a jurisdiction must have a board or department responsible for tree care, an urban forestry program supported by the spending of at least $2.00 per capita, and a proclamation recognizing and celebrating Arbor Day.

P.L.A.N.T. Awards were presented to:

  • Howard County: James Robey
  • Columbia Association: Maggie Brown
  • Howard County Master Gardeners: Cheryl Haymes and Cheryl Shea

The Columbia Association in partnership with the Howard County Forestry Board was instrumental in the creation of the new arboretum at Lake Elkhorn in Columbia, dedicated on April 23, 2005.

Cheryl Haymes and Cheryl Shea, Howard County Master Gardeners, are responsible for the creation and success of the ”Streams and Trees Program” in partnership with the Howard County Department of Recreation & Parks and the Howard County Public School System. This program involves 5th grade students from several public schools planting trees throughout Howard County with the guidance of Master Gardeners.

The European Linden tree located at 5745 Furnace Avenue, Elkridge, was selected by the Forestry Board not only because of its beauty, but its caretaker’s efforts for preservation, as well as accessibility for the general public to be able to view the tree as part of Elkridge’s heritage and history.
