The Howard County Forestry Board mostly works behind the
scene in support of the trees in Howard County. Every
now and again however we make the front page (or some other
page) with our new programs, our new arboreta, and our
new efforts to involve Howard County citizens in
recognition of our natural resources.
Among our special events which have made the news are:

Arboreta Without Walls: 25 October 2000
-
County Executive Jim Robey announced
the beginning of the Howard County Arboreta on October
25th at Omar Jones Plaza. The Arboreta are sponsored by the Howard
County Forestry Conservancy District Board in partnership with the
Howard County Government.

Centennial Park Arboretum: 26 April 2001
-
In cooperation with the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, the Forestry Board
formally opened the Centennial Park Arboretum. On Friday, 26 April 2001, a bright and sunny
morning, a goodly crowd gathered to witness the opening of the Arboretum, and to take part in the
ceremonies. County Executive Jim Robey presided and announced the official opening.

Harwood Arboretum: 7 April 2004

The Forestry Board, in conjuction with the Howard County Department of
Recreation and Parks, formally opened the Harwood Park Arboretum.
On Thursday, 7 April 2004, County Executive Jim Robey presided and announced
the official opening.

Wye Oak Recognition: 17 April 2004
-
In April of 1988 the Howard County Forest
Conservancy Board and the Howard County Committee
for the Bicentennial of the Constitution of the United States
presented a Wye Oak seedling to the citizens of Howard County.
Today the Wye Oak seedling has grown outside the County Office Building
to a mature tree.
On Family Day, April 2004, Howard County celebrated this tree
with a formal recognition and the presentation of a plaque
identifying the occasion.

Cherry Tree Project: 29 April 2005

The Howard County Forestry Board joined with Howard County Tourism and the
Claudia Mayer Cancer Research and Image Center to make the Howard County
Cherry Tree Project a reality. On April 29th our efforts were recognized
during the official dedication of the Centennial Park Founders Grove.

Arbor Day Celebration: 29 April 2005

The Howard County Forestry Board, Howard County Libraries, Howard County Tourism and government officials joined in the celebration of Arbor Day and the inauguration of the Route 1 revitalization program...

Marshalee Drive Project: 29 October 2005
-
The Howard County Forestry Board joined over seventy volunteers in planting over 230 trees on the Marshalee Drive extension.

Arbor Day 2006: 28 April 2006

The Howard County Forestry Board and many of our friends celebrated the 2006 Champion Tree at the Elkridge Furnace Inn.
